  • Extension dormitory
As you have read in earlier Newsletters, one of ZAP’s principal aims is to keep girls in Secondary school. Obviously in order to improve their career outlook, but also to prevent their being married off at an early age. Crucial to this approach is offering’them a dormitory on the premises of the Secondary school. At present, 80 girls make use of the dormitory, but there is now a huge lack of space. A few months ago we started building a second dormitory which will offer accommodation to another 60 girls. After the summer holidays, the girls will be able to move into their new accommodation.
The progamme aimed at keeping girls in school has been sponsored by McKinsey for many years.

    Primary School
The construction work for the extension of the Primary school in Nkulamaziba with another 2 classrooms is ongoing.

    Oral hygiene
Sophie Dudok van Heel and Isabella Venema were the first to hand out a toothbrush and toothpaste to the girls of the Secondary School and give them a demonstration of the proper way to brush your teeth. In turn, these girls are now responsible for explaining and demonstrating oral hygiene to the children of groups 6 and 7 of the Primary school.

    In memoriam Robin Keith Buske - 10-04-1940 - 28-04-2022
Rob played a crucial role in the development of ZAP, from its very beginning. He lived in Zambia his entire life and had intimate knowledge of all the ins and outs needed to set up such an organisation, as well as ways to avoid potential pitfalls or make use of unexpected loopholes. He was fluent in the local language, and as an accomplished carpenter, also produced numerous doors with bars as well as bunk beds for the schools.
With Rob’s passing, ZAP loses an important adviser and an exceptional and beloved friend.
Dear Rob, ZAP would never have been able to accomplish what we have done without your tireless energy and essential counseling.
