  • In last March’s Newsletter, we let you know that, behind the scenes, we were very busy formulating a modified strategy for the coming years. In addition to all the schools with Teacher accommodation, sports fields and vegetable gardens that we realised in the past 13 years, the time is now ripe for the next step: the creation of a Training Centre in which practical vocational training will be given.

    The training centre
After an intensive period of consultations and negotiations with the Ministries and Communities concerned, we have been successful: the construction authorisation for a Vocational Training Centre in Nkulamaziba is there and we have scrupulously mapped out which vocations are most in demand.

In May we started on the construction of two classrooms in which the theoretical classes will take place. In the next phase half-open workshops will be added for the practical lessons.

In the initial phase, and in close consultation with all those concerned, it has been decided to start with courses for carpenters and seamstresses. At a later date we will also include training courses for electricians, welders and midwives.

How could you help us with this - other than with regular donations?
  • The cost of a toolkit, consisting of at least a hammer, a saw, a chisel, a measuring tape and a water level is €115,00
  • A sewing machine costs €75,00

  • We can assure you that there is overwhelming interest in this initiative and we are convinced that this will give a crucial boost to the employment situation in this desperately poor region.

Some other facts that we would like to share with you
  • Since the establishment of ZAP 13 years ago, more than 20.000 children in the Kaindu district have been given the chance to follow basic education.

  • The Dormitory next to the Secondary School in Nkulamaziba now has 68 girls in residence. They feel safe and they no longer need to cover the great distance between home and school on a daily basis, with all the inherent dangers. There are another 80 girls on the waiting list. As soon as we have enough donations for an extension, we will be able to start building a second dormitory.

  • The programme aimed at keeping girls in school longer in order to avoid forced premature marriage, is a great success. During the past 5 years some 500 girls participated.

  • Next to the schools we have planted vegetable gardens, which are being tended by the teachers and the children. Because of this we have noticed an important change in the eating patterns: The people are starting to realise that there is more than just chima (maize porridge).

  • The elementary school in Nkulamaziba is already being attended by some 900 children living within a radius of some 10 kilometers and here too there is a waiting list. This will necessitate an extension of one more classroom block of two classrooms. The cost will be € 29.000,–.

  • We are extremely proud of the boundless commitment of our team in Zambia. It is a huge challenge to have to continually anticipate all the problems which both corona and the inflation in the country bring with them.

Our heartfelt thanks to all those who support us and you can be assured that we will continue to work flat out in the coming months as well!
