NEWSLETTER 41 - december 2020 | |||
Take part in the future of ZAP How? In the last month of this quite extraordinary year, we would like to give you an update on the various projects running in Nkulamaziba. To wit: the Secondary school, the Dormitory and the Primary school. In Zambia as elsewhere, Corona has had a considerable impact on life in general but luckily the progression of the virus up to now could be deemed positive. The realisation of this Secondary school is the biggest project ZAP has undertaken in its 12 years existence. Right in the middle of the bush there now stands a School with 15 classrooms en 17 teachers houses and a large number of sanitary facilities. As of now 14 qualified teachers are at work here and in the near future that will increase to 23. Right now in excess of 1200 youngsters, living in a radius of some 20 kilometers, attend the Primary and the Secondary schools. As a result of the population growth within the local communities, we expect to see that number increase to some 2000 kids in 3 years time. You will understand that we are both proud of and grateful to all those who have made this possible. Dormitory for girls attending the Secondary school In our September Newsletter we talked extensively about the need to build a dormitory. It is crucially important that specifically girls also go on to Secondary education after lower school. Only then will they be able to map out an independent future and will not be subject to being married off prematurely. This philosophy perfectly fits ZAPs programme for keeping girls in school, which at the moment supports 100 girls. The major problem is that for many of the girls it is too far and too unsafe to cover the distance from home to school on a daily basis. Consequently the girls themselves have taken the initiative of sleeping over at school. However, this is an untenable and unhygienic situation. Thanks to the Wilde Ganzen, Unesco Netherlands and many other (private) donors, we are in the process of finishing a dormitory for 80 girls. To get it up and running we urgently need: 40 bunk beds with matrasses, 20 wardrobes, 5 tables with benches. Cost of bunk bed with 2 mattresses: 157 Cost of wardrobe: 65 Cost of table with 2 benches: 85 Donate to account ZAP: NL75 ABNA 0471 670 634 ZAP has an ANBI status The Primary school in Nkulamaziba The Primary school is so popular that as of now some 780 children attend. This means that some 200 children are being taught in the open air. The community has assumed its responsibility and, under the guidance of ZAP, has started to dig the foundations and to manufacture the bricks for an extension of 2 classrooms. Financial help for the construction materials (some 20.000) is unavailable. Donate to account ZAP: NL75 ABNA 0471 670 634 ZAP has an ANBI status We fervently hope to be able to finish the Primary and Secondary schools as well as the Dormitory in Nkulamaziba by next June. This means that we can then transfer these projects to the Ministry of Education, the Parent-Teacher committee and the Maintenance committee. As far as ZAP is concerned, this would mean that we can then start concentrating on another urgent need in this poor province: the construction of a Centre for short-term practical training courses. In the next Newsletter we will present further information about this initiative. ZAP wishes all of you a Merry Christmas and a very good and healthy 2021! HELP ZAP
