Take part in the future of ZAP How? In Zambia, as just about everywhere else, the corona virus has had a considerable impact. The ZAP schools have had to close, but construction work on the various projects has continued, some logistical hurdles notwithstanding. Dormitory for girls at the Secondary School at Nkulamaziba Our biggest wish: a Dormitory for girls on the site of the Secondary School at Nkulamaziba, is finally close to being realised. With thanks to the Wilde Ganzen and Unesco Centrum Nederland, among others, we now have the necessary funds to make a start in September. 5 years ago we started a programme aimed at keeping girls in school, mostly to counter the practice of them being married off at an early age. We could never have imagined that this project would be such a huge success! At present, some 150 girls are part of this programme. These young women cover great distances, mostly on foot, to get to school, braving the ever-present dangers of the Bush. Several incidents have already happened and it is therefore absolutely essential that the dormitory, housing some 100 girls, is realised. Next to the sleeping quarters, with bunk beds and cupboards, there will be an outside kitchen with a seating area and washroom. We need all the help we can get to proceed to the next phase of this project! We still need EUR. 25.000. Handover Ceremony of the Mother Waiting Shelter at Sable Junction Clinic In the presence of Founding Father Michiel Egeler and his partner Vera Kroll, the handover of the Mother Waiting Shelter took place recently. The women come from far afield to this clinic to give birth and can now spend time recovering in the shelter before returning home, which was previously impossible. Vegetable Gardens With thanks to a number of individual donors, two schools now boast a vegetable garden! Why are these so important? Children (and their parents) have a very monotonous diet. Their main meal consists of shima (mealie-pap). Through the vegetable gardens, the children learn to eat differently and thus also influence their parents. One of the schools now has an irrigation system. We are looking for the necessary funds to also install irrigation at the other school! EUR.2.500 After having spent half the year in Zambia due to the Corona restrictions, I am now in the Netherlands for a few weeks. I will return to Zambia in early September, to take up, with renewed energy, the finishing of the Dormitory and the last phase of the construction of the Secondary School in Nkulamaziba. We will keep you posted and please stay healthy! HELP ZAP
