  • In this Newsletter, it gives us great pleasure to look back, together with you, on the past year and to share with you our provisional plans up until 2025. Without your contributions, your interest and your support, it would not have been possible to realise our projects. On behalf of the entire community in Nkulamaziba, Kaindu and the ZAP team we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

    Interest in ZAP
It gave all of the 31 local workers, the teachers and the Community an enormous boost that throughout the year various projects were visited by contributors who have been with us from the very start. One of these was a delegation from the “Wilde Ganzen” (Wild Geese). This organisation has supported ZAP since 2010.

Anke Makaske, Project Adviser for Southern Africa:
“On Tuesday October 1st, Kees de Jong (Director) Pauline Eenhorn (Supervisory Council) and I, visited the ZAP schools in Nkulamaziba on behalf of the Wilde Ganzen.
After our many discussions with Josien Dudok van Heel in the Netherlands, it was high time for us to pay an on-site visit to see what has been achieved and to meet the staff of both schools and the ZAP construction team. It was truly impressive to see what has been accomplished in Nkulamaziba in these past six years of The Wilde Ganzen’s involvement with the project! Two beautiful, solidly built schools with motivated staff and pupils in this remote region. What tremendous development opportunities for these youngsters. Our compliments also for the ZAP approach, focussed on a thorough involvement of the local community, local initiative and financing of the running costs by the Government.
At the end of our visit we were regaled with beautiful song and dance by the pupils and warm words of appreciation and thanks from the staff. It is a privilege for the Wilde Ganzen to work with ZAP.
Josien, many thanks for the well organised visit, the constructive conversations and the delicious chicken!”

    Looking back on 2019

    Secondary School
  • The finishing touches are being applied to our most ambitious project since the start of ZAP: the secondary school in Nkulamaziba.
  • The construction of a double teacher’s house is almost finished. This means that the school now has 11 houses for 23 teachers. We still need at least 3 more double teacher’s houses!

  • In earlier Newsletters we discussed the urgent need for a dormitory for the girls. It is far too dangerous for them to have to walk the frequently long distances home on a daily basis. At the moment, they sleep in a classroom and wash and cook outside. A far from ideal situation.
The community recently took the intiative to start the construction, but partly because of the bad harvest, it is impossible for them to carry all the costs. We are therefore trying to find extra financing.

Programme for girls in group 5,6 and 7
This programme was started 4 years ago to ensure that these girls stay in school and thus have a greater chance to continue on to secondary school. The parents play an essential role in this and we are also trying to convince them not to marry off their daughters at a early age.
Of the 100 girls, only 5 dropped out, of whom 2 because of moving away. A fantastic achievement!

Mother waiting shelter with outside kitchen and toilet block next to the Sable Junction clinic
In January, thanks to a special gift, we were able to start construction of a waiting shelter next to a birthing clinic in the middle of the Bush. It is with great pride that we can report that this project will be finished by the end of November. This was another initiative that was really essential. Women come great distances to the clinic and are sometimes forced to wait in the scorching sun or pouring rain. Soon that will be over!

    Plans for 2020

  • Construction of 3 more double teacher’s houses. With these we should have (for the time being) enough accommodation for the teachers.
  • The realisation of the dormitory for the girls of the Secondary school.
  • Extending the vegetable garden at the secondary school.

  • Provisional plans for 2020-2025

We recently bought 4 hectares of land in the middle of the Kaindu region for the construction of a Training Centre. Here we want to provide practical professional training courses, such as for carpenters, electricians, bicycle repairers, seamstresses etc. In cooperation with the Ministry of Health, we also intend to provide refresher courses for nurses and midwives.
In cooperation with National Parks (formerly ZAWA) we want to provide information about anti-poaching and give introductory courses to students wanting to become professional scouts.
All training programmes will be set up in consultation with the relevant Government departments.

We wish you a pleasant and warm month of December!
