  • Since our last newsletter in June, a lot has happened in Zambia. Let me tell you about it.

In October Loliet Enneking (ZAP boardmember), Monique Dekking (ZAP Chairman) and her husband, Antoon van Balkom ( ZAP Founding Father) came to Zambia. In addition to the fact that they were delighted by Zambia’s flora and fauna, they also visited all of ZAP’s projects. They were particularly struck by the fact that the teacher’s accommodations both at the Kaindu Basic School as at the Big Concession School were very well maintained by the teachers. The teachers at these two schools made a point of telling us how happy and proud they were of their new houses. During the visit to the Clinic in Kaindu, they were able to see how intensively the Mother Waiting Shelter and the small classroom are being used. During their visit we celebrated the opening ceremony of the school and the teacher’s houses in Nkulamaziba. Together with the ZAP team and the community, everything had been very well prepared. Loliet, Monique and Antoon were the guests of honour.

    Monique en Antoon:
    "DANKIE , DANKIE, NIEDERLANDIE!
Hundreds of children came running towards us when we drove up for the opening ceremony of the school and the teachers’ houses in the community of Nkulamaziba. It was a very emotional experience. In his speech, the District Commissioner – the highest authority in the province - made a point of underlining the tremendous added value of ZAP’s contribution to this area and also promised to provide more qualified teachers. And when all is said and done: that is what it’s all about! Thanks to ZAP’s efforts, thousands of children living in the bush are now being educated.

It had been more than two years since we last visited ZAP’s projects, and we were incredibly impressed with the tremendous progress that has been achieved. ZAP has emphatically proved that it is no nine days’ wonder! Josien and her local teams work continuously, without any overhead and in great harmony, to develop both education and healthcare in this area. We are proud to be associated with ZAP as boardmember and Founding Father respectively and thus to be able to contribute to its work."

    Loliet:
"This was my first trip to Zambia. I was really touched to see how much ZAP contributes to the communities in rural areas. Children walk every day on the hot sand through the bush on their bare feet to get to school. With happy faces, eager to learn.

From conversations with the teachers, you feel the enormous motivation to lift this area with its many different communities to a higher plane. The gratitude is palpable.

I was very impressed to see what Josien, with her local ZAP teams, has achieved in the last 4 ½ years. The motivation and discipline is tremendous. I am proud to be a member of the Board and ZAP will continue to inspire me to carry on. There is still a lot to do!"

In the video below you will get an impression of the opening ceremony.:

HELP ZAP ACHIEVE ITS PLANS FOR 2013

    NKULAMAZIBA
More than 15.000 people live in this community. You will understand that two classrooms can in no way provide sufficient room for all the children in the area. ZAP wants to build a second school-block with three classrooms.

To achieve this, ZAP needs funds. Estimate: € 76.185

AROUND THE KITUMBA OPEN AIR PRISON
Now that the school is as good as finished, ZAP wants to start the construction of the teachers’ accommodation in 2013. Our plan is to build three in the coming year.

Construction of 3 teacher’s houses with open air kitchen, toilet and washroom.
    Estimate: € 35.550

ZAP wishes all of you a very warm and festive month of December.

    With my very best regards,
