ZAP 2008 – 2018

This month ZAP is celebrating its 10th anniversary. It seems like yesterday that we started our first -modest- project: the renovation of 7 teacher’s houses. And now we are 3 schools, 4 vegetable gardens, 2 waiting shelters, 29 teacher’s houses, 2 chicken farms and any number of other initiatives further! Time has just flown. But, in spite of all the ups and downs, haven’t we achieved a lot! We are incredibly proud, and grateful to all the people who made this possible. The staff, the communities, the Government departments, Chief Kaindu, the Headmen, but certainly not least You, our ambassadors. Many, many thanks for your involvement, your financial support and your belief and confidence in ZAP. It is, and will always be, a tremendous challenge and we have quite a long way to go as yet. We very much hope that we may continue to count on your support for the next 10 years!

The progress of the secondary school,in Nkulamaziba
The construction of the secondary school - our most ambitious project to date - is progressing steadily. Representatives from the Ministry of Education, regional departments and teachers from all corners of the region, visit regularly to assess the progress of our school. Up to now, 6 schoolrooms have been delivered and in spite of the fact that construction is by no means finished, the school already counts 250 pupils! 8 qualified teachers are working at the school. In 2017 we started the construction of the 2 chemistry labs with 2 offices and 2 strong rooms where all the chemicals are stored. Because of all the existing regulations, it was a tremendous challenge to get these built. Construction Manager Jericko took it upon himself to acquire the necessary know-how at a school in the town of Mumbwa, and we also got advice from the Ministry of Education and the future Chemistry teacher (who has 20 years of experience at other schools).

Our secondary school is the only one in a 30-kilometre radius in this region and our aim is to make it accessible to 900 children in 2 years’ time

What does that mean?
  • In the next 2 years we must build another 4 teacher’s houses and 5 classrooms
  • The construction of a boarding school with accommodation for 200 children is an absolute necessity. It is not unusual for children to have to travel 10-15 kilometres to get to school. And that twice in one day!! The realisation of this boarding school project also forms part and parcel of our very successful programme to keep girls in school. We started this initiative 3 years ago and of the 100 girls ZAP has sponsored, 95 still attend school. We recently had to take extra protective measures after the rape of a young girl on her way home from school. The boarding school will therefore be for girls in the first place. The Ministry of Education has earmarked a contribution, but unfortunately this is by no means sufficient to cover the costs.

In this video you will get an impression of our activities during the last few months.

Other news:
  • In 2017 we have again been able to sponsor 8 ZAP building workers for the official construction diploma course
  • After the last truck had to be written off, we were able to purchase a good second-hand truck in South Africa, thanks to a few generous private donors. Without this truck it would have been impossible to get all the building materials to Nkulamazibaon time even during the rainy season!
  • The Nursery school in Nkulamaziba is attended by more and more little ones to get them accustomed to the rhythm of primary school. At the request of the teachers, we are going to try to find sponsors for a small playground (€2000.-). The teachers will prepare the ground for the installation of swings, a slide etc.
  • We are happy to be able to report that we will, in 2018, continue our collaboration with de Foundation “De Wilde Ganzen”.
  • The wife of Jericko, our Construction Manager, gave birth recently, at the age of 46 to a daughter. A beautiful little girl whom they called Josien.
  • In early January Zambia suffered a cholera epidemic which had huge consequences for the entire country. All schools and universities had to remain closed until further notice by the Ministry of Health. No trucks carrying fresh produce were permitted to enter the capital, which had disastrous consequences for all farmers. The authorities closed all markets and selling anything from a roadside stall was strictly forbidden. A huge clean-up operation took place in all towns. Before entering any shop or bank you had to spray your hands with disinfectant. Fortunately, all these measures were retracted on January 25.

Kind regards,

ZAP (Zambia Allocation Program)
